Ryan Schroeder
Ryan’s work as a counsellor centres around his lived experience both as a parent to two neurodivergent kids and as someone who has left a fundamentalist religious tradition.
Ryan takes an intersectional and anti-oppressive approach, which means that he considers and respects the many facets of his clients’ identities in their work together. This includes but is not limited to race, culture, gender, neurotype, sexual orientation, age, and religious background.
Ryan (he/him) holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (University of British Columbia) and is currently working on an M.A. in Counselling Psychology (Yorkville University).

Ryan’s Services
-
Ryan will guide and support your child as they engage in play and art, explore sensory activities, and share their Special Interests. They may move towards self-directed goals at your child’s pace. Instead of focusing on behaviour modification, Ryan will instead offer accommodations, curating the environment to meet your child’s sensory and social needs. Out of that sense of safety, behaviour change can occur authentically.

Explore your strengths and challenges in a low-pressure, non-judgmental space. Ryan respects how you share your concerns whether that be through talking, texting, writing, art, play, movement, or silence. Share your Special Interests, and move towards self-acceptance and self-expression at a pace and in a manner that suits you best.

Ryan’s work as a life coach draws on his own experience leaving Evangelicalism (he grew up as a pastor’s kid and nearly became a career missionary before dropping out of seminary). Part of Ryan’s process included 10 years of graduate-level study, and his Ph.D. in Religious Studies allows him to look at the deconstruction process both from an academic and lived-experience perspective. He takes a client-centred, trauma-informed, and inclusive approach that aims to help clients (re)discover the joy of being human after ditching the constraints of toxic religion. Ryan helps his clients to deconstruct harmful beliefs and behaviours, identify core values and delights, and set about reclaiming personal agency.
How do their conversations look? Honest and non-judgmental. Affirming and motivational. Realistic and imaginative. Together, Ryan works with clients to create uniquely meaningful lives.

If you identify with perfectionism, are a high-achiever, or can never do things halfway, Ryan may be a great fit for you. Obsessive-Compulsive Personalities are often highly misunderstood. As a perfectionistic person himself, Ryan knows first-hand how debilitating it can feel to avoid projects when you can’t do them perfectly or to neglect your social life and health needs because of fixations on areas of interest. He has also found ways to embrace these traits, and guides others to do the same via self-compassion and offering affirming psychoeducation.
